USAID’s CASS Scholarship Program
|
A group of CASS scholars attend an orientation program before departing to the US for their studies. |
The CASS Program (Cooperative Association of States for Scholarships), founded in 1985, is part of the Central and Latin American Scholarship Program (CLASP) created by the Kissinger Commission to increase scholarship opportunities for students from Central America to study in the U.S.
The CASS Program, implemented by Georgetown University and funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), provides scholarships to youth with limited financial resources to study in community colleges in the U.S. The selected fields of study are important for the economic and social development of Honduras, for example: public health, environmental sciences, agriculture production, primary education and business administration. Scholarships are offered for programs lasting two years, one year, and six months.
Upon return to their home countries, the scholars are expected to apply their newly acquired knowledge and skills to further the development of their communities. Since the beginning of the program, more than 1,000 Hondurans nationwide (95 students from the department of Cortes) have received CASS scholarships.
