Fulbright Scholarships

LASPAU

The Fulbright Academic Exchange Program was established by the U.S. Congress in 1946 “to increase mutual understanding between the people of the United States and the people of other countries.” The Fulbright Program is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the United States Department of State under policy guidelines established by the J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Board, a 12-member board of presidential appointees. Fulbright Commissions and Public Affairs Sections of U.S. Embassies worldwide set national, institutional, and field-of-study priorities.

LASPAU has collaborated with the Fulbright Program since 1975 in the administration of the Faculty Development Program, bringing up to 150 educators each year from Latin America and the Caribbean to the United States. Traditionally, the majority of grantees study at the master’s level, although today approximately 40% of current grantees are studying at the doctoral level. Faculty are selected for their potential to contribute to their disciplines as well as to their academic institutions. After their studies in the United States, grantees resume teaching, research, and, in some cases, administrative positions at their home institutions, sharing the benefit of their educational experiences.

LASPAU actively partners with U.S. and Latin American universities, Fulbright Commissions, and Public Affairs Sections to design flexible programs that meet the needs of countries, institutions, and the grantees themselves. These efforts include ecology programs, cost-sharing initiatives, and workshops.

The contributions of U.S. and Latin American institutions are a mainstay of the academic programs, providing over 50% of the total resources for the Faculty Development Program in the form of tuition awards, assistantships, and other financial support. Home institutions assist faculty participating in the programs by maintaining their salaries in absentia and providing loans or grants to cover expenses. Other in-country sponsors such as foundations, corporations, and government agencies provide significant resources for the programs.
